What happens to joints as we age?
As we age the cartilage surfaces of our joints start to wear down and become roughened. This can create an inflammatory microenvironment in the joint which leads to further breakdown. This inflammation can lead to irregularities in joint fluid and stiffening of the joint but inflammation of the joint capsule. This can lead to pain and stiffness.
What options are available to help improve the living environment of the joint?
Hyaluronic Acid -a gel-like lubricating joint injection, that is made up of primarily hyaluronic acid. It coats joint surfaces, improving the friction coefficient, coding roughened arthritic surfaces, and reduces pain and inflammation.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Blood is obtained via blood draw and centrifuged to separate the platelets and plasma from the red blood cells and some of the white blood cells. Platelets are concentrated 5-10 times your physiologic rate and injected via ultrasound guidance into the joint. Once in the joint the platelets release growth factors and cytokines help modulate the microenvironment of the joint, significantly reducing pain, stiffness, slowing down the arthritic process.
Alpha 2 Macroglobuline (Plasma Proteins)
The remaining plasma from the PRP preparation is passed through a filter to obtain the plasma proteins like alpha 2 macroglobulin (A2M). The plasma proteins are used for reinjection. Must be done in combination with PRP.
